SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Comparing IFRS 17 and Solvency II'
DESCRIPTION:This session aims at analysing the impact of IFRS 17 versus Solvency II. After a general\ndescription of both frameworks\, we highlight the most recent changes following the Solvency II review with a focus on discount rates and risk margin. We will then explain IFRS 17 accounting choices versus Solvency II and benchmark those. Finally\, we will show the impact of IFRS 17 on the management of the contracts when issued and during their lifetime (profit testing and key indicators).\nAnmeldeschluss: 2026-03-24\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0478

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'The New Insurance Performance Metrics (in Gaap\, Solvency 2 & IFRS)' on 22/23 & 25/26 June 2026
DESCRIPTION:on 22/23 & 25/26 June 2026 \nDue to the inversion of the production cycle\, the insurance business is very different from other traditional industries. Understanding\, measuring and managing the performance of insurance companies is difficult due to the specific risks insurance companies must cover. It is therefore essential that you\, as an employee of the insurance sector\, understand how your company operates\, how its activity is measured via the balance sheet and the income statement\, which main regulations influence this measure\, which indicators are used to assess the performance and what levers can improve this performance. \nThe aim of this web session is to:\n– Understand how to read an insurance balance sheet (with a focus on technical provisions and own funds)\n– Be able to read an income statement (P&L) across regulatory frameworks\n– Compute relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)\n– Understand the impact of risk mitigation (reinsurance) and Assets and Liabilities Management (ALM) on the KPIs \nWe will cover life as well as non-life insurance. Health insurance will not be specifically covered.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2026-06-18

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session Non-Life Reserving
DESCRIPTION:As Insurance is being impacted by new and disruptive technology\, how will actuarial reserving techniques be impacted? Whilst triangle methods have traditionally been seen as the key methods in the reserving area\, this may be challenged in the future by more complex expectations\, improving technology\, modelling capabilities\, etc.\nReserving practices are expected to keep changing\, as the influences of big data and\nregulatory requirements continue to evolve.\nThe aim of this workshop is to \n\nRefresh classical actuarial/statistical techniques used in non-life reserving (Gaap and Solvency 2).\nFocus on some practical problems faced by reserving actuaries\, by presenting practical examples.\nIntroduce more advanced techniques used in non-life reserving in order to open new perspectives on more granular reserving calculation\, case estimates\, etc.

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session Introduction into Special Aspects of Life Reinsurance
DESCRIPTION:After an initial general introduction to reinsurance\, we will look at the specific risks in life (re)insurance and appropriate reinsurance solutions. In this context we will also analyse specific terms commonly used in non-life insurance\, such as loss frequency and loss amount.\nConcrete examples will be used to illustrate the differences between life and non-life\nreinsurance. In this context\, we will also take a closer look at the possible maximum loss (PML) known from property and casualty insurance and apply it to life reinsurance.\nUsing an Excel model\, the impact of life reinsurance on the risk profile and income statement of a life insurer is analysed in a practical manner in order to identify possible optimizations in life insurer’s earnings situation.

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session Actuarial Data Science – Basic
DESCRIPTION:Due to technological progress in connection with Data Science and Digitalization\, summarized under the buzzword Big Data\, a plethora of opportunities and challenges for the industry is arising. Technological developments have now also reached the insurance industry and thus have a direct impact on the working world of actuaries.\nUnder the heading Actuarial Data Science\, the procedures and methods of data mining are embedded in the actuarial context. These range from mathematics-driven statistical methods for derivation of insights from data to computation-driven methods sometimes summarized as machine learning. As a result of almost unlimited computing capacity through cloud computing and wide availability of training data\, tried and tested methods of machine learning\, such as artificial neural networks\, are experiencing a renaissance in theory and practice.\nThis seminar is the first part of a four-part series at the German Actuarial Association (DAV)\, where we cover a wide variety of topics ranging from fundamentals of digitalization in the insurance industry to data management and deep learning. Also\, it is based on the learning objectives of the DAV for Actuarial Data Science Basic\, which is part of the actuarial training in Germany.

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session CERA\, Module A: Quantitative Methods of ERM
DESCRIPTION:The 4-day web session assists actuaries in broadening their knowledge about modern\nquantitative financial and actuarial modelling; these topics form an essential part of the CERA syllabus. At the beginning of the online training we give a brief overview of the EAA-route to the CERA designation. The core part of the web session begins with an introduction to the modern theory of risk measures. Next\, a number of statistical techniques are discussed\, that are highly\nactuarial-academy.com relevant for the analysis of actuarial and financial data and for the model-building process in risk management. Among others\, we will consider extreme value theory\, dependence modelling\, copulas\, and various aspects of integrated risk management. The training continues with an introduction to the modelling and the management of interest rate and credit risk. In particular\, participants will learn how to price simple interest options or Credit Default Swaps\, how to account for counterparty risk and how to deal with credit portfolio risk.\nThe web session consists of lectures and exercise sessions. In fact\, exercise sessions\, where various exercises and supplementary examples are discussed\, form an integral part of the seminar: they help the participants to understand the qualitative and quantitative techniques introduced in the lectures\, and they are a key element in the preparation for the CERA exam.

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session From Excel Tariff Calculators to LLM-Powered Python Code
DESCRIPTION:Excel-based tariff calculators remain a cornerstone of actuarial work in life insurance\, but they come with well-known limitations: complex formulas and embedded VBA code\, a lack of transparency\, and difficulties in scaling or integrating with modern IT environments. For actuarial migrations and product validations\, these tools are still widely used – yet they are also one of the main bottlenecks when it comes to efficiency and reproducibility.\nRecent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) provide new opportunities to overcome these challenges. Instead of manually rewriting legacy Excel logic\, actuaries can now use LLMs to automatically port existing tariff calculators into structured\, well-tested Python code. This enables reproducibility\, improves maintainability\, and opens the door for automation in future\nactuarial workflows.\nIn this web session\, we will showcase two complementary approaches to this task. The first approach is a “crafted” workflow\, where actuaries interact directly with the LLM using screenshots\, formulas\, and VBA modules to achieve a working Python prototype within a short time. The second approach is an “industrial” workflow\, designed for repeatability and automation\, where Excel structures are systematically exported into text formats and processed end-to-end by the LLM. Both approaches will be illustrated with a real-life life insurance example\, highlighting their strengths\, limitations\, and practical implications.\nParticipants will not only see how LLMs can handle complex actuarial logic\, but also how such methods can reduce manual effort\, accelerate migration projects\, and prepare actuarial teams for a future where AI becomes a natural part of actuarial toolchains. The session bridges the gap between everyday actuarial work in Excel and modern coding environments\, showing how actuaries can leverage LLMs to make the transition both approachable and scalable.

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Worldwide Mortality: From Historical Trends to Future Projections'
DESCRIPTION:Life expectancy is a key metric for understanding mortality trends and it varies widely depending on factors such as age\, gender and geography. During this websession\, we will delve into the latest research and data on mortality trends and explore how they have changed over time. \nSince the middle of the 20th century\, world-wide mortality has steadily improved\, but not at the same rate in all regions\, so that clear differences can be recognised between countries. In some OECD – countries\, there has even been a recent decline in mortality improvement\, and the COVID-19 pandemic has at least temporarily reinforced this trend.\nWe analyse different age groups\, their causes of death and how they coincide with mortality developments. In addition to that\, we will discuss the drivers behind changes in mortality\, such as advances in medicine and public health\, changes in lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. \nUnderstanding the various drivers of mortality is essential for predicting future trends and consequently for the assessment of the biometric risk in life- and pension insurance. \nOur online training will also explore the implications of changing life expectancies for our work as actuaries. We will discuss how we can use data and analysis to better understand these changes and make informed decisions about the future. In this context\, we also outline the strengths and limitations of the Lee-Carter model as a widely used model for predicting future mortality rates. \nLast but not least\, we discuss general uncertainties around future mortality\, where we focus especially on the demographic and geographical factors analysed in the first part of the lecture. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2026-01-26\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0525

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Stochastic Projection Models in Life Insurance'
DESCRIPTION:With the introduction of new accounting frameworks\, the corresponding alignment of planning and performance management and with the increasing need for sophisticated asset liability management\, the stochastic assessment of risk and value in connection with participating life insurance portfolios has become the industry standard over the last decade. The underlying basis for such an assessment is a cash flow projection model\, simulating the way the life insurance undertaking is working and reflecting it by projecting local GAAP balance sheets and income statements. Due to the complexity associated with such calculations\, simplifications are required especially regarding the modelling of the insurance contracts to meet operational and technical constraints. Therefore\, it has become an area of actuarial research to develop methodologies that allow stochastic cash flow models to achieve results of adequate accuracy based on acceptable run times with affordable IT capabilities.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-11-17

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Emerging Risks: Statistical Analysis and Scenario Building'
DESCRIPTION:In a context of widespread instability\, the actuarial analysis of emerging risks takes on particular importance to facilitate the adaptation of insurance to these profound changes. Whether it be old risks with poorly anticipated consequences (such as the epidemiological risk\, as demonstrated by the recent Covid-19 crisis\, whose consequences can significantly exceed purely healthcare boundaries)\, risks undergoing strong and worrying evolution (such as climate risk)\, or more recent risks (such as cyber risk)\, the task of actuaries is particularly delicate. The lack of data is notably a hindrance to a rigorous approach to these important questions. This session aims to lay the groundwork for a scientific approach to this problem and to introduce some tools for discussing the insurability of these new risks.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-11-11

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Hands-on Adaptive Learning of GLMs for Risk Modelling in R'
DESCRIPTION:During the web session\, we will first explore the theoretical foundations of both the bias-variance trade-off in predictive modelling and general GLM regularisation. We will then study the explicit design of the algorithm. The remainder will be hands-on as we provide extensive code that implements the algorithm in the statistical programming language R. We will discuss and run the code using a realistic case study in actuarial claims frequency modelling. You will learn how to use the programme and apply the algorithm to non-life claims data for pricing. Further focus will be on the visualisation of the results\, especially on the insights gained from the learned meta-results of the algorithm\, e.g.\, the implicit way how we selected\, prioritised and pre-processed variables.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-11-06

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Assets and Liabilities Management Part 2: Advanced'
DESCRIPTION:For an insurance company\, ensuring the proper coordination between assets and liabilities in order to achieve targeted financial objectives is of paramount interest. A strategy used to reach such objectives is „asset and liability management“ (ALM in short). ALM can therefore be viewed as any ongoing process that defines\, implements\, and monitors financial strategies to manage assets and liabilities together. \nIn recent years\, the modelling tools used in ALM strategies have become increasingly sophisticated and the technical aspects of current insurance regulation have increased. As a result\, some ALM aspects have become more and more difficult to understand and master.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-11-03\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0518

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Addressing Class Imbalance in Machine Learning'
DESCRIPTION:In both life and general insurance\, many predictive modelling tasks involve outcomes that occur infrequently—such as policy lapses\, claims\, or fraud. This leads to class imbalance\, a situation where the target variable’s classes are not represented equally in the data\, often with one class (e.g. policy lapse) being vastly outnumbered by the other. If not properly addressed\, class imbalance can result in misleading classification models that overlook rare but critical events.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-30\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0523

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Machine Learning Finance for Pension Funds with Examples'
DESCRIPTION:In general\, machine learning (ML) is the study of algorithms that improve through experience. These algorithms or models can make systematic\, repeatable\, validated decisions based on historical data. ML has come a long way in recent years\, which is reflected in the methods available for time series forecasting (they are also important for assessing parameters for different kinds of liability provisions). \nTherefore\, this type of analysis can help actuaries and members of pension fund boards of trustees to accurately assess different kinds of pension fund parameters for assets and liabilities and to prepare any kind of forecasts. Visualizing the evolution of pension fund parameters and forecasting them will help the board of trustees explain how to adjust them in the actuarial provision or what to expect in their future evolution. \nFor this workshop\, several examples for analyzing and providing such assumptions will be prepared and explained. Many useful visualization techniques will be presented with practical examples (via Python).\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-28\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0530

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Risk Aggregation and Capital Allocation: From Calibration to Application and Beyond'
DESCRIPTION:This web session focuses on the aggregation of individual risks to the overall level of an insurance company. To achieve this\, we apply both deterministic and stochastic copula-based approaches\, along with key risk measures such as Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES). The outcome of this process is the capital requirement\, which must be covered by the company’s own funds—a limited and costly resource that necessitates careful management. \nAgainst this backdrop\, we explore risk steering methods that support economically sound decision-making\, addressing key questions such as: \nHow can we impose effective risk limits for business segments?\nHow can we identify value-enhancing and value-reducing business segments in the context of the firm’s overall risk profile?\nHow can we make informed decisions on risk mitigation tools?\nHow can we incorporate the cost of capital into insurance pricing?\nA fundamental concept underlying all these questions is capital allocation\, and specifically the gradient (Euler) capital allocation principle. The principle is directly linked to “marginal capital requirements” and is compatible with the performance measures mentioned above. \nHowever\, the proper implementation of capital allocation in risk management\, risk limiting\, and decision making often imposes significant challenges. On the computational side\, the gradient allocation principle requires determining the derivative of the risk measure—typically Value-at-Risk or Expected Shortfall—with respect to business volumes or other decision variables. Obtaining these derivatives is numerically challenging\, especially when risk measurement relies on Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate methods to enhance the stability of these estimations\, such as kernel estimation. In addition\, the allocation has the limitation of accounting only for the risk diversification effects of the current portfolio\, which can easily become invalid if the portfolio changes… more details on the website\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-24\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0512

SUMMARY:Worldwide Mortality: From Historical Trends to Future Projections
DESCRIPTION:Life expectancy is a key metric for understanding mortality trends and it varies widely\ndepending on factors such as age\, gender and geography. During this websession\, we will delve\ninto the latest research and data on mortality trends and explore how they have changed over\ntime.\nSince the middle of the 20th century\, world-wide mortality has steadily improved\, but not at the\nsame rate in all regions\, so that clear differences can be recognised between countries. In some\nOECD – countries\, there has even been a recent decline in mortality improvement\, and the\nCOVID-19 pandemic has at least temporarily reinforced this trend.\nWe analyse different age groups\, their causes of death and how they coincide with mortality\ndevelopments. In addition to that\, we will discuss the drivers behind changes in mortality\, such\nas advances in medicine and public health\, changes in lifestyle and socioeconomic factors.\nUnderstanding the various drivers of mortality is essential for predicting future trends and\nconsequently for the assessment of the biometric risk in life- and pension insurance.\nOur online training will also explore the implications of changing life expectancies for our work\nas actuaries. We will discuss how we can use data and analysis to better understand these\nchanges and make informed decisions about the future. In this context\, we also outline the\nstrengths and limitations of the Lee-Carter model as a widely used model for predicting future\nmortality rates.\nLast but not least\, we discuss general uncertainties around future mortality\, where we focus\nespecially on the demographic and geographical factors analysed in the first part of the lecture.
