SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Understanding IFRS 17
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the two-day web session is to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to the new measurement\, presentation and disclosure guidance for insurance contracts. It will cover life\, health and non-life business\, including the special guidance on direct participating contracts and shorter term non-life contracts and give useful examples. \nIn the web session\, we will first shed a light on the context of accounting for insurance contracts within the IFRS 17 framework. We will present and discuss the general concepts behind the new model and refer to the application of valuation models like the Variable Fee Approach (VFA) and the Premium Allocation Approach (PAA). The web session will proceed with a discussion of topics specific to individual lines of business (highlighting topics still under discussion) and summarize potential approaches and solutions. We will close with an overview of methodical hot topics relevant for technical implementation seen in various European markets\, share emerging market views and discuss these with the participants. \nOverall\, the goal is to enable participants to understand the standard and help transferring the requirements into your specific situation. It is thus intended to prepare participants for model development\, implementation\, testing\, reviewing and consulting with management\, accounting and auditors. \nRegistration deadline: 29 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: EAA's 2nd Climate Day: Risks and Opportunities for the Insurance Industry
DESCRIPTION:While the actuarial community works on developing new ways to measure the economic impact of the risk posed by global warming\, it is exceedingly important for Actuaries to gain an understanding of the underlying science of climate change. Having discussed the basics of climate science in a dedicated web session in Q4 2020\, we are now going to move from climate science to climate models and then focus onto insurance-specific requirements and applications. \nTo begin with\, we show how laws of physics and chemistry can help us build practical climate models dealing with glaciers\, rising water level etc. We then discuss how a gap between climate models and actuarial models can be bridged e.g. in order to capture how climate change will impact mortality risk. \nNext\, we zoom into the insurance context by embarking on a journey through various relevant national and European regulatory requirements. In particular\, we examine how insurance companies can take global warming into consideration in their ORSA. \nHaving discussed several requirements insurers need to comply with\, we move on by considering climate change as a unique investment opportunity. After an overview of Net Zero financing needs and key transition drivers\, we look into green finance and investment examples covering equity\, bonds and alternative asset classes. \nFinally\, we look into the flood-related climate risk. We discuss several applications of flood and climate modeling as an input to financial models\, along with best practices for integrating them with financial models. As an example\, we present a case study on flood and climate risk to residential property and mortgage risk in the United States. \nRegistration deadline: 28 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Advanced Concepts of Clustering in Insurance
DESCRIPTION:The course shows how different algorithms can be used to obtain a segmentation of insurance data. The methods covered range from centroid-based (k-means\, k-prototypes) to probabilistic (Gaussian Mixture Models) and density-based (DBSCAN) approaches. We demonstrate how the clustering results can be visualized and evaluated. Moreover\, it will be shown how the clustering results can be used to identify outliers in the data set. We also cover techniques that reduce the dimension of the data so that the segments can be computed either on aggregated information or using only a subset of the available information. The course puts an emphasis on the practical application and therefore showcases all concepts on an insurance data set. \nRegistration deadline: 23 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Mathematical Modelling for Actuaries
DESCRIPTION:Actuaries are very experienced in modelling financial risks either stemming from population dynamics or from random events. Probability theory and statistics is their daily bread. But there are many other phenomena out in the world without having a direct financial impact but should be understood by actuaries as well. This web session is about models which typically are not covered in full by actuarial exams\, but which could bring better insights to risks actuaries have to price. We will cover models from many different areas\, whether it is medicine\, construction\, meteorology\, biology or others. Of course\, this web session can only give some examples of typical models and type of models\, but it should enable participants to find more in literature or develop their own ideas. \nRegistration deadline: 18 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Latest Trends in Life Products
DESCRIPTION:In this web session\, we discuss present trends relating to life insurance products and the development of life insurance products. We will deal with savings\, retirement as well as risk products. \nWith respect to savings and retirement products\, we will tackle the challenge of combining safety and performance opportunity in the low interest environment. In this context we will also discuss investment-linked risk products. With respect to the development of life insurance products\, we talk about how a modular product development approach and cooperation can accelerate and innovate the development process which finally will also help at sales. \nRisk products as term life\, income protection and long-term care are important parts of the portfolio of a life insurer. Beside the well-known occupational disability cover\, essential ability covers have seen an enormous development e.g.\, in Germany over the last 10 years as an inexpensive\, but nevertheless powerful disability cover. Insurtechs and startups offer additional benefits and improve processes as underwriting and claims management. A short look at machine learning tools to derive best estimate rates will complete the web session. \nIf you are looking for insights into the latest product trends in life insurance\, then joining this we session is a must! \nRegistration deadline: 15 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Practical Machine Learning Applications in Finance and Insurance
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this web session is that participants should become familiar with machine learning techniques used to solve practical problems in finance\, banking and insurance. To achieve this we begin from the scratch and introduce machine learning techniques step by step: To start with\, we give an overview of this interesting field with the primary focus on several techniques such as neural networks\, among others. The key for an efficient application is the way of training machine learning algorithms and thus we focus our attention on this optimization as well. We strengthen our learned knowledge by focusing on several case studies: We consider an example within the Solvency II context such as implementing an internal model to calculate the Solvency Capital Requirement (SCR)\, but also applications to financial market such as option pricing by Monte Carlo methods or trading strategies. During our complete web session we learn how the introduced algorithms can be implemented so that the participants are able to build up their own use cases in Python at the end. A vital part of this web session is the group work to get familiar with the implementation. \nRegistration deadline: 11 October 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Longevity Heterogeneity and Pension Schemes
DESCRIPTION:Many demographic studies have shown an important positive relationship between life expectancy and socio economic conditions. Shortly summarized\, we could say that rich people live longer than poor people. The correlation can be observed\, based on different indicators such as education level\, wealth or level of income. The gap in terms of life expectancy is even widening and can go nowadays beyond 10 years. This reality has strange effects\, especially on public pension schemes\, paying lifetime annuities from retirement age. Indeed\, social security systems are normally based on redistribution and solidarity principles. However\, inequalities in terms of life expectancy generate regressive effects and induce indirect transfers from the poorest to the wealthiest affiliates. We could then apply different kinds of actuarial corrections on the pension design in order to compensate partially or totally this effect and restore some form of redistribution\, as well in DB (Defined Benefit) as in DC (Defined Contribution) pension schemes. \nRegistration deadline: 8 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Professionalism Plus Ethics for Enhanced Professionalism (2 days)
DESCRIPTION:The Professionalism Plus course is about augmenting your professionalism skills to enhance both your self-interest and your capacity to create win-win outcomes from your professional interactions. The course is a mixture of theory and practical examples with an optional additional practical assignment at the end of Day 1. The practical examples will cover techniques to help with problem solving\, making difficult decisions\, managing risk and improving your communication skills. After the course\, attendees will have an improved wherewithal to assess character\, develop their own character\, resolve ethical dilemmas and more generally\, to act prudently and responsibly in their interest and in the interests of others. \nThe course is designed to complement the very technically driven actuarial education to aid attainment of a more rounded general real world wherewithal. Actuarial education is very rational and very much inside the box. It can leave gaps in terms of aiding the full development of an actuary’s interpersonal and commercial wherewithal\, including a wherewithal to consider the public interest\, a key professional requirement in most actuarial associations. For example\, the course will draw out a wherewithal regarding whistleblowing that can be essential because if such an issue arises\, an actuary can appear stuck between a rock and a hard place\, if they blow the whistle\, they can face significant personal hardship\, whilst if they fail to blow the whistle\, they can face professional sanction. \nRegistration deadline: 29 October 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session "Long-Term Care Insurance Living Benefits: Risk Profiles"
DESCRIPTION:Life annuities are aimed at providing income and\, notably\, post-retirement income. In the context of health insurance\, long-term care insurance (LTCI) products conversely aim at protection against the risk of senescent disability. Technical and financial features of the above products might negatively impact their attractiveness\, from both the customer’s and the insurer’s perspective. Nonetheless\, appropriate combinations of benefits can result in more attractive policy designs. As LTCI products are rather recent\, scarcity of data and data quality cause a significant exposure to the uncertainty risk inherent in the choice of the biometric bases. A sensitivity analysis then allows us to quantify\, for diverse products\, the degree of exposure to this risk. \nRegistration deadline: 3 November 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Macro-Level Actuarial Reserving Models
DESCRIPTION:Over time\, the understanding of all the assumptions behind the typically used reserving models can have grown a bit stale\, and more recent developments might not have percolated all the way to the day-to-day practice. This seminar will help the participants to overcome this. \nThe most widely used deterministic macro-level models\, such as the Chain Ladder and the Bornhuetter-Ferguson model\, will be discussed in full detail during this webinar\, but also stochastic macro-level models\, such as the OverDispersed Poisson model or ODP model for example\, will be covered. This entails a proper freshing up of the underlying assumptions and how the model is estimated\, but also checks on determining if the chosen model is appropriate for the data at hand\, and under which circumstances one should go for one type of macro-level model or the other. \nIn this web training a detailed overview is provided of the aforementioned models and during the practical sessions\, R code is provided on how to implement most of the discussed topics\, hereby rendering the participants completely autonomous after the webinar. \nAnmeldeschluss: 26.10.2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Economic Scenario Generators Part II – Advanced Training for ESG Practitioners
DESCRIPTION:The Economic Scenario Generators (ESG) are at the core of stochastic models used by insurance companies. The applications of stochastic models are very diverse and include such applications as economic capital under Solvency II\, ALM projections\, dynamic hedging etc. Hence\, practitioners have to keep abreast of the current ESG-related challenges and approaches to overcome these. \nThis web session builds upon the contents of our introductory ESG web session offered by the EAA in March 2021. We are now going to discuss a few advanced ESG related topics: \n\nPractical ESG calibration challenges\nCredit risk modelling challenges\nFixed-income volatility challenges\nESG and Least Square Monte Carlo\n\nWe expect that the participants of the upcoming web session are familiar with basic ESG concepts such as interest rate models or equity models\, are not afraid of some technical cooking recipes from the ESG kitchen and are keen to discuss the practicalities of ESG work in the context of the current market environment and regulatory requirements. \nRegistration Deadline: 15 October 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Micro Reserving in Non-Life Insurance: A Challenge for Risk Management
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this web session is to propose a use of machine learning tools in the reserving process of non-life insurance. Starting with a brief presentation of possible data science applications for data completion and analyses\, the web session presents a new approach for micro reserving\, based on machine learning technics and classical actuarial projection. This R&D approach is also challenged with another individual claims reserving approach and a classical aggregated one to propose a fair conclusion about the micro reserving interest for the European insurance companies. \nRegistration deadline: 21 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: IFRS 17 – Challenges in the Derivation of the Risk Adjustment and Its Confidence Level
DESCRIPTION:Under IFRS 17\, the Risk Adjustment is intended to measure the compensation that the entity requires for bearing the uncertainty associated with the amount and timing of the cash flows that arises from non-financial risk. The IFRS 17 Risk Adjustment creates challenges for both life and P&C (re)insurers such as how to estimate it and how to determine the confidence level needed for disclosure purposes. \nThis web session will first provide a presentation of the challenges related to the derivation of the Risk Adjustment and the fulfilment of the key IFRS 17 requirements related to its calculation. This will be followed by a discussion about the need for a proper confidence level disclosure methodology. The presentation will then provide an overview of methodological solutions and will include applications for both life and P&C companies. \nRegistration deadline: 16 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: How to be More Efficient in Technical Pricing in P&C Insurance
DESCRIPTION:Technical Pricing of P&C Insurance is a complex thing – both technically and organizationally in the company. Most actuaries have a lot of good ideas to innovate their models\, processes – their company. But they normally just lack the time or the resources to do so. \nThis EAA web session is aiming to addresses this issue: Helping pricing actuaries to gain more efficiency in technical pricing in order to have more resources available for innovation. \nRegistration deadline: 14 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Actuarial Data Science Introplication
DESCRIPTION:Due to technological progress in connection with Data Science and Digitalization\, summarized under the buzzword Big Data\, a plethora of opportunities and challenges for the industry is arising. \nTechnological developments have now also reached the insurance industry and thus have a direct impact on the working world of actuaries. \nUnder the heading Actuarial Data Science\, the procedures and methods of data mining are embedded in the actuarial context. These range from classical statistical methods of data analysis as well as regression and cluster methods to machine learning. As a result of almost unlimited computing capacity through cloud computing and extensive available training data\, tried and tested methods of artificial intelligence\, such as artificial neural networks\, are experiencing a renaissance in theory and practice. \nWe have not yet fully understood the breadth and depth of the resulting future opportunities for the insurance industry. However\, there are already numerous applications in the actuarial environment. We have been doing some of them for a long time (and now see them in the context of AI)\, we are trying out some of them. \nIntroplication is a compound artificial word consisting of Introduction and Application. And in the web session\, we would like to combine both: a basic introduction to the subject area with applications in the actuarial environment. \nRegistration deadline: 10 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Understanding the Covid Pandemic - Models in Mathematical Epidemiology
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic\, mathematical epidemiology has been tasked with explaining and forecasting case and fatality numbers based on incomplete data. As both the disease itself as well as policies introduced to curtail its spread turned out to have considerable effects on health and economic outcomes\, it is more imperative than ever for risk evaluation to understand how epidemics spread and how interventions affect them. \nThis web session focuses on differential equation models in epidemiology and illustrates at the working example Covid-19 what can be learned from public health data in light of these models. \nRegistration deadline: 6 September 2021
