SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Macro-Level Actuarial Reserving Models
DESCRIPTION:Over time\, the understanding of all the assumptions behind the typically used reserving models can have grown a bit stale\, and more recent developments might not have percolated all the way to the day-to-day practice. This seminar will help the participants to overcome this. \nThe most widely used deterministic macro-level models\, such as the Chain Ladder and the Bornhuetter-Ferguson model\, will be discussed in full detail during this webinar\, but also stochastic macro-level models\, such as the OverDispersed Poisson model or ODP model for example\, will be covered. This entails a proper freshing up of the underlying assumptions and how the model is estimated\, but also checks on determining if the chosen model is appropriate for the data at hand\, and under which circumstances one should go for one type of macro-level model or the other. \nIn this web training a detailed overview is provided of the aforementioned models and during the practical sessions\, R code is provided on how to implement most of the discussed topics\, hereby rendering the participants completely autonomous after the webinar. \nAnmeldeschluss: 26.10.2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Economic Scenario Generators Part II – Advanced Training for ESG Practitioners
DESCRIPTION:The Economic Scenario Generators (ESG) are at the core of stochastic models used by insurance companies. The applications of stochastic models are very diverse and include such applications as economic capital under Solvency II\, ALM projections\, dynamic hedging etc. Hence\, practitioners have to keep abreast of the current ESG-related challenges and approaches to overcome these. \nThis web session builds upon the contents of our introductory ESG web session offered by the EAA in March 2021. We are now going to discuss a few advanced ESG related topics: \n\nPractical ESG calibration challenges\nCredit risk modelling challenges\nFixed-income volatility challenges\nESG and Least Square Monte Carlo\n\nWe expect that the participants of the upcoming web session are familiar with basic ESG concepts such as interest rate models or equity models\, are not afraid of some technical cooking recipes from the ESG kitchen and are keen to discuss the practicalities of ESG work in the context of the current market environment and regulatory requirements. \nRegistration Deadline: 15 October 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Micro Reserving in Non-Life Insurance: A Challenge for Risk Management
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this web session is to propose a use of machine learning tools in the reserving process of non-life insurance. Starting with a brief presentation of possible data science applications for data completion and analyses\, the web session presents a new approach for micro reserving\, based on machine learning technics and classical actuarial projection. This R&D approach is also challenged with another individual claims reserving approach and a classical aggregated one to propose a fair conclusion about the micro reserving interest for the European insurance companies. \nRegistration deadline: 21 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: IFRS 17 – Challenges in the Derivation of the Risk Adjustment and Its Confidence Level
DESCRIPTION:Under IFRS 17\, the Risk Adjustment is intended to measure the compensation that the entity requires for bearing the uncertainty associated with the amount and timing of the cash flows that arises from non-financial risk. The IFRS 17 Risk Adjustment creates challenges for both life and P&C (re)insurers such as how to estimate it and how to determine the confidence level needed for disclosure purposes. \nThis web session will first provide a presentation of the challenges related to the derivation of the Risk Adjustment and the fulfilment of the key IFRS 17 requirements related to its calculation. This will be followed by a discussion about the need for a proper confidence level disclosure methodology. The presentation will then provide an overview of methodological solutions and will include applications for both life and P&C companies. \nRegistration deadline: 16 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: How to be More Efficient in Technical Pricing in P&C Insurance
DESCRIPTION:Technical Pricing of P&C Insurance is a complex thing – both technically and organizationally in the company. Most actuaries have a lot of good ideas to innovate their models\, processes – their company. But they normally just lack the time or the resources to do so. \nThis EAA web session is aiming to addresses this issue: Helping pricing actuaries to gain more efficiency in technical pricing in order to have more resources available for innovation. \nRegistration deadline: 14 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Actuarial Data Science Introplication
DESCRIPTION:Due to technological progress in connection with Data Science and Digitalization\, summarized under the buzzword Big Data\, a plethora of opportunities and challenges for the industry is arising. \nTechnological developments have now also reached the insurance industry and thus have a direct impact on the working world of actuaries. \nUnder the heading Actuarial Data Science\, the procedures and methods of data mining are embedded in the actuarial context. These range from classical statistical methods of data analysis as well as regression and cluster methods to machine learning. As a result of almost unlimited computing capacity through cloud computing and extensive available training data\, tried and tested methods of artificial intelligence\, such as artificial neural networks\, are experiencing a renaissance in theory and practice. \nWe have not yet fully understood the breadth and depth of the resulting future opportunities for the insurance industry. However\, there are already numerous applications in the actuarial environment. We have been doing some of them for a long time (and now see them in the context of AI)\, we are trying out some of them. \nIntroplication is a compound artificial word consisting of Introduction and Application. And in the web session\, we would like to combine both: a basic introduction to the subject area with applications in the actuarial environment. \nRegistration deadline: 10 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Understanding the Covid Pandemic - Models in Mathematical Epidemiology
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic\, mathematical epidemiology has been tasked with explaining and forecasting case and fatality numbers based on incomplete data. As both the disease itself as well as policies introduced to curtail its spread turned out to have considerable effects on health and economic outcomes\, it is more imperative than ever for risk evaluation to understand how epidemics spread and how interventions affect them. \nThis web session focuses on differential equation models in epidemiology and illustrates at the working example Covid-19 what can be learned from public health data in light of these models. \nRegistration deadline: 6 September 2021

SUMMARY:EAA e-Conference on Data Science & Data Ethics
DESCRIPTION:The actuarial focus has changed significantly over the last couple of years. Computational power is increasing with exponential growth\, in addition more and more data is available. This combination puts the actuarial profession into a position where a new understanding has to be developed on today‘s possibilities of actuarial science and its ethical implications. The new role of actuaries within big data and ongoing digitalisation is not yet fully defined. Best practice experience sharing and exchange of ideas is needed. \nThe EAA is delighted to offer all interested actuaries and other experts a forum for knowledge exchange:\nOn 29 June 2021\, the second EAA e-Conference on „Data Science & Data Ethics“ will take place live and virtually. The programme will combine keynote speeches with food for thought from well-known experts and selected talks from professionals through a Call for Papers. \nRegistration deadline: 27 June 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Operational Risk for Actuaries
DESCRIPTION:Operational risk is the risk of loss\, arising from inadequate or failed internal processes\, people and systems or from external events. That is the definition of operational risk for regulatory purposes. Operational risk management is usually part of ERM and actuaries are typically not involved in these processes. That is often because of poor data related to rare events and some lack of methodologies. The goal of this web session is to provide actuaries with tools and ideas how to better involve in operational risk management and how to use existing actuarial toolboxes to improve valuation of operational risk. \nRegistration deadline: 4 June 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: IFRS 17: A Deep Dive Into Revenue from Insurance Contracts
DESCRIPTION:This web session takes a closer look at the „top line“ item in the profit and loss account: insurance contract revenue. Depending on the nature of the business\, insurance revenue may be very similar to the starting point for net income calculation according to current accounting regimes – or it may substantially differ. In either case\, companies need to prepare for substantial changes to internal and external processes: Calculation of revenue\, explanations to (and by!) internal and external stakeholders\, and amended key performance indicators (KPIs). \nRegistration deadline: 24 May 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Climate Day
DESCRIPTION:While the actuarial community works on developing new ways to measure the economic impact of the risk posed by global warming\, it is exceedingly important for Actuaries to gain an understanding of the underlying science of climate change. Having discussed the basics of climate science in a dedicated web session in Q4 2020\, we are now going to move from climate science to climate models and then focus onto insurance-specific requirements and applications. \nTo begin with\, we show how laws of physics and chemistry can help us build practical climate models dealing with glaciers\, rising water level etc. Models discussed in this intro lecture not being actuarial\, we already recognize a few links to the world of insurance. \nNext\, we zoom into the insurance context by embarking on a journey through various relevant national and European regulatory requirements. In particular\, we examine how insurance companies can take global warming into consideration in their ORSA. \nHaving discussed several requirements insurers need to comply with\, we move on by considering climate change as a unique investment opportunity. After an overview of Net Zero financing needs and key transition drivers\, we look into green finance and investment examples covering equity\, bonds and alternative asset classes. \nFinally\, we discuss equity release mortgages\, which are very long-term loans popular in several markets such as the UK\, and examine how global warming could impact them over decades of their lifespan through numerous market and insurance risks. \nRegistration deadline: 10 May 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Understanding IFRS 17
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the two-day web session is to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to the new measurement\, presentation and disclosure guidance for insurance contracts. It will cover life\, health and non-life business\, including the special guidance on direct participating contracts and shorter term non-life contracts and give useful examples. \nIn the web session\, we will first shed a light on the context of accounting for insurance contracts within the IFRS 17 framework. We will present and discuss the general concepts behind the new model and refer to the application of valuation models like the Variable Fee Approach (VFA) and the Premium Allocation Approach (PAA). The web session will proceed with a discussion of topics specific to individual lines of business (highlighting topics still under discussion) and summarize potential approaches and solutions. We will close with an overview of methodical hot topics relevant for technical implementation seen in various European markets\, share emerging market views and discuss these with the participants. \nOverall\, the goal is to enable participants to understand the standard and help transferring the requirements into your specific situation. It is thus intended to prepare participants for model development\, implementation\, testing\, reviewing and consulting with management\, accounting and auditors. \nRegistration deadline: 4 May 2021

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Structural Reforms for Public Pension Schemes
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this web session (which consists of 2 parts) is to present various experiences of structural reforms of public pension schemes such as NDC (notional account) or point systems and to analyze these techniques in terms of fair equilibrium between financial sustainability and social adequacy. This analysis will motivate to introduce intermediate approaches between classical DB plans and NDC notional accounts\, using inter-generational risk sharing of the aging cost and automatic adjustment mechanisms. The influence of longevity spreads between different socio economic groups will also be addressed in terms of intra generational fairness as well as the actuarial neutrality in case of flexible retirement age. \nRegistration deadline: 19 April 2021
