SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Hands-on Adaptive Learning of GLMs for Risk Modelling in R'
DESCRIPTION:During the web session\, we will first explore the theoretical foundations of both the bias-variance trade-off in predictive modelling and general GLM regularisation. We will then study the explicit design of the algorithm. The remainder will be hands-on as we provide extensive code that implements the algorithm in the statistical programming language R. We will discuss and run the code using a realistic case study in actuarial claims frequency modelling. You will learn how to use the programme and apply the algorithm to non-life claims data for pricing. Further focus will be on the visualisation of the results\, especially on the insights gained from the learned meta-results of the algorithm\, e.g.\, the implicit way how we selected\, prioritised and pre-processed variables.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-11-06

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Assets and Liabilities Management Part 2: Advanced'
DESCRIPTION:For an insurance company\, ensuring the proper coordination between assets and liabilities in order to achieve targeted financial objectives is of paramount interest. A strategy used to reach such objectives is „asset and liability management“ (ALM in short). ALM can therefore be viewed as any ongoing process that defines\, implements\, and monitors financial strategies to manage assets and liabilities together. \nIn recent years\, the modelling tools used in ALM strategies have become increasingly sophisticated and the technical aspects of current insurance regulation have increased. As a result\, some ALM aspects have become more and more difficult to understand and master.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-11-03\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0518

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Addressing Class Imbalance in Machine Learning'
DESCRIPTION:In both life and general insurance\, many predictive modelling tasks involve outcomes that occur infrequently—such as policy lapses\, claims\, or fraud. This leads to class imbalance\, a situation where the target variable’s classes are not represented equally in the data\, often with one class (e.g. policy lapse) being vastly outnumbered by the other. If not properly addressed\, class imbalance can result in misleading classification models that overlook rare but critical events.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-30\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0523

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Machine Learning Finance for Pension Funds with Examples'
DESCRIPTION:In general\, machine learning (ML) is the study of algorithms that improve through experience. These algorithms or models can make systematic\, repeatable\, validated decisions based on historical data. ML has come a long way in recent years\, which is reflected in the methods available for time series forecasting (they are also important for assessing parameters for different kinds of liability provisions). \nTherefore\, this type of analysis can help actuaries and members of pension fund boards of trustees to accurately assess different kinds of pension fund parameters for assets and liabilities and to prepare any kind of forecasts. Visualizing the evolution of pension fund parameters and forecasting them will help the board of trustees explain how to adjust them in the actuarial provision or what to expect in their future evolution. \nFor this workshop\, several examples for analyzing and providing such assumptions will be prepared and explained. Many useful visualization techniques will be presented with practical examples (via Python).\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-28\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0530

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Risk Aggregation and Capital Allocation: From Calibration to Application and Beyond'
DESCRIPTION:This web session focuses on the aggregation of individual risks to the overall level of an insurance company. To achieve this\, we apply both deterministic and stochastic copula-based approaches\, along with key risk measures such as Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES). The outcome of this process is the capital requirement\, which must be covered by the company’s own funds—a limited and costly resource that necessitates careful management. \nAgainst this backdrop\, we explore risk steering methods that support economically sound decision-making\, addressing key questions such as: \nHow can we impose effective risk limits for business segments?\nHow can we identify value-enhancing and value-reducing business segments in the context of the firm’s overall risk profile?\nHow can we make informed decisions on risk mitigation tools?\nHow can we incorporate the cost of capital into insurance pricing?\nA fundamental concept underlying all these questions is capital allocation\, and specifically the gradient (Euler) capital allocation principle. The principle is directly linked to “marginal capital requirements” and is compatible with the performance measures mentioned above. \nHowever\, the proper implementation of capital allocation in risk management\, risk limiting\, and decision making often imposes significant challenges. On the computational side\, the gradient allocation principle requires determining the derivative of the risk measure—typically Value-at-Risk or Expected Shortfall—with respect to business volumes or other decision variables. Obtaining these derivatives is numerically challenging\, especially when risk measurement relies on Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate methods to enhance the stability of these estimations\, such as kernel estimation. In addition\, the allocation has the limitation of accounting only for the risk diversification effects of the current portfolio\, which can easily become invalid if the portfolio changes… more details on the website\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-24\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0512

SUMMARY:Worldwide Mortality: From Historical Trends to Future Projections
DESCRIPTION:Life expectancy is a key metric for understanding mortality trends and it varies widely\ndepending on factors such as age\, gender and geography. During this websession\, we will delve\ninto the latest research and data on mortality trends and explore how they have changed over\ntime.\nSince the middle of the 20th century\, world-wide mortality has steadily improved\, but not at the\nsame rate in all regions\, so that clear differences can be recognised between countries. In some\nOECD – countries\, there has even been a recent decline in mortality improvement\, and the\nCOVID-19 pandemic has at least temporarily reinforced this trend.\nWe analyse different age groups\, their causes of death and how they coincide with mortality\ndevelopments. In addition to that\, we will discuss the drivers behind changes in mortality\, such\nas advances in medicine and public health\, changes in lifestyle and socioeconomic factors.\nUnderstanding the various drivers of mortality is essential for predicting future trends and\nconsequently for the assessment of the biometric risk in life- and pension insurance.\nOur online training will also explore the implications of changing life expectancies for our work\nas actuaries. We will discuss how we can use data and analysis to better understand these\nchanges and make informed decisions about the future. In this context\, we also outline the\nstrengths and limitations of the Lee-Carter model as a widely used model for predicting future\nmortality rates.\nLast but not least\, we discuss general uncertainties around future mortality\, where we focus\nespecially on the demographic and geographical factors analysed in the first part of the lecture.

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Modern Capital Market Concepts for Life and Pension Products'
DESCRIPTION:Due to the recent shifts in capital markets and a stricter regulatory environment\, insurers need to rethink their product offerings to stay ahead of the competition and offer life and savings solutions well suited to the various requirements of policyholders. This includes the need for capital guarantees in combination with strong performance engines and the focus on new and alternative asset classes as underlying for insurance policies.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-21\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0506

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Intergenerational Fairness and Pensions'
DESCRIPTION:Pension funds link generations simply by the time scale of their transactions. Participants pay pension contributions for decades so that getting benefits after retirement\, hopefully again for decades. During the course of their career new cohorts start their working life\, so there is always active and retired living side-by-side. One group is only paying into the fund and so accruing pension rights\, while the other is getting benefit payments from the fund. While this description sounds simple\, their relationship is far from that. All the important external determinant factors\, being economic or demographic or legal\, will change in such a long period of time. These factors change the financial sustainability or benefit adequacy of the pension fund and so favour one group of the members to the others.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-10-20\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0513

SUMMARY:EAA 'CERA\, Module B: Taxonomy\, Modelling and Mitigation of Risks' Veranstalter: EAA
DESCRIPTION:The web seminar focuses on quantitative analyses of financial and non-financial risks of an insurance company and the effect and possible applications of risk mitigation techniques. After an introduction to the economic valuation of an insurance company\, including stochastic valuation models and approximation techniques for life companies\, and the building blocks of its economic balance sheet\, the risk measure as well as the relevant regulatory requirements of Solvency II will be discussed. Different concepts of risk modelling covering from standard formula to fully internal models will be presented. \nMethods for modelling market\, credit\, operational and underwriting risks will be presented in detail. The discussion covers the risk definition and identification and how it can be distinguished from other risks. Qualitative and quantitative valuation approaches will be discussed – including scenario analyses\, stress tests\, deterministic and stochastic assessments. Furthermore\, crucial aspects of any model such as assumptions\, distributions\, calibration and validation are discussed\, as well as limitations and criteria for the adequacy of a model for solving a given problem. \nHaving introduced and discussed the risk modelling\, tools and techniques will be discussed that are available in the insurance business to mitigate these risks. That includes the discussion around the implications of reinsurance and securitisation as well as portfolio management. We will also present what life insurance companies subject to traditional with profit business can do to hedge their main risks. \nBoth elements\, risk modelling and measurement as well as risk mitigation\, are closely related and interact with each other\, what will be reflected in the topics presented and the structure of the seminar. \nThe consolidated view on risks in a company and an outlook on Group models close the course… read more on EAA website.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-09-12\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/cera/seminar?No=E0495

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Actuarial Data Science - Completion'
DESCRIPTION:This is part four of four courses required to obtain the EAA Certificate in Actuarial Data Science. To earn the certificate\, participants must complete all four modules\, which include both the seminar and the exam. Members of AVÖ and/or DAV will obtain the additional title Certified Actuarial Data Scientist (by AVÖ and/or DAV) by fulfilling the same requirements. \nFurthermore\, all courses are open to interested actuaries to deepen their knowledge and skills in the field of Actuarial Data Science (without exams). \nDue to technological progress in connection with Data Science and Digitalization\, summarized under the buzzword Big Data\, a plethora of opportunities and challenges for the industry is arising. \nTechnological developments have now also reached the insurance industry and thus have a direct impact on the working world of actuaries. \nUnder the heading Actuarial Data Science\, the procedures and methods of data mining are embedded in the actuarial context. These range from mathematics-driven statistical methods for derivation of insights from data to computation-driven methods sometimes summarized as machine learning. As a result of almost unlimited computing capacity through cloud computing and wide availability of training data\, tried and tested methods of machine learning\, such as artificial neural networks\, are experiencing a renaissance in theory and practice. \nThis web session is the fourth part of a four-part series at the German Actuarial Association (DAV). In this online training\, we will expand on and deepen some of the topics already known from the basic\, advanced and immersion seminar\, discussing further important techniques in the context of deep learning and data storage. It is based on the learning objectives of the DAV for Actuarial Data Science Immersion\, which is part of the actuarial training in Germany.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-09-02\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0470

SUMMARY:EAA's Anniversary Conference
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 20 Years of Advancing Actuarial Knowledge \nThis year\, we are proud to celebrate our 20th anniversary. To mark this milestone\, we are hosting the EAA Anniversary Conference – a full-day online event\, free of charge for the entire actuarial community. Together\, we will celebrate two decades of collaboration\, growth and learning. \nThis special event brings together voices from our network — national actuarial associations\, lecturers\, actuarial umbrella organisations\, our founding associations\, and\, of course\, our participants & partners. It’s both a moment to look back at our journey and a chance to explore the topics that will shape the actuarial profession in the years to come. \nTo create a programme that truly reflects our community and the actuarial field in total\, we reached out to our national partner associations and asked them to suggest topics they find relevant. SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Non-Life Pricing Using Machine Learning Techniques with R Applications''
DESCRIPTION:Non-Life insurance is facing many challenges ranging from fierce competition in the market or evolution in the distribution channel used by consumers to evolution of the regulatory environment. \nPricing is the central link between solvency\, profitability and market shares (volume). Improving pricing practice encompasses several dimensions: \n– Technical: is our pricing adequate to cover the underlying cost of risk of my policyholders and the other costs we are facing? Which are the key variables driving the risk? Are they adequately taken into account in our pricing? What’s the impact of the claims history of my policyholder on its expected risk? In which segment are we profitable and in which are we not profitable?\n– Competition: at what price will we attract the segments that we target and price out those that we do not want? Is the positioning of our competitors influencing our pricing practice and our profitability? What’s my position with respect to my competitors in terms of pricing? What are the segments in which I am well positioned and the segments where I am not well positioned?\n– Elasticity: what price (evolution) are our existing customers prepared to accept? Does the sensitivity to price evolution depend on the profile of my customer?\nSegmentation: is our segmentation granular enough for our purposes? \nThe aim of this web session is to present some advanced actuarial/statistical techniques used in non-life pricing\, competition analysis and profitability analysis. The web session focuses on some practical problems faced by pricing actuaries and product managers and presents some new techniques used in non-life pricing in order to open new perspectives for product development (competition analysis\, profitability analysis\,…). \nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-06-13

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Intro to Conformal Prediction & Uncertainty in Actuarial Models'
DESCRIPTION:Quantifying Uncertainty in Actuarial Models: An Introduction to Conformal Prediction\nAs the actuarial landscape becomes increasingly data-driven\, traditional statistical methods are evolving\, linking point estimates with quantifiable uncertainty. Conformal Prediction is a powerful framework used to evaluate the uncertainty of predictions. It turns point predictions into prediction regions\, in this way\, when you make a prediction\, the output has probabilistic guarantees that it covers the true outcome. In this web session\, we will explore the theoretical foundations of Conformal Prediction\, its assumptions\, methodology\, and advantages over traditional approaches. Participants will see how this technique can be a disruptive innovation in risk assessment\, pricing\, reserving\, and forecasting by integrating uncertainty directly into predictions. The session is balanced between theory and hands-on activities\, offering real-world examples and code demonstrations in classification\, regression\, time series\, natural language processing (NLP)\, and computer vision\, all applied to challenges in the actuarial field. \nThe web session aims to equip actuarial professionals with the knowledge and skills behind Conformal Prediction\, improving the reliability and interpretability of their predictive models. By the end of the course\, participants will understand how to apply conformal methods to various types of data and leverage these techniques to improve decision-making processes in actuarial tasks.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-06-11\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0508

SUMMARY:AA Web Session 'Understanding IFRS 17'
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, after more than two decades of debates\, outreach and Exposure Drafts\, the IASB finally published the new IFRS 17 standard for Insurance Contracts. After additional three years of further debates on several actuarial and accounting-related aspects of the implementation\, the IASB issued amendments to IFRS 17 on 25 June 2020\, which included a postponed effective date of IFRS 17 by two years to allow for an orderly adoption and at the same time to enable more insurers to implement the new IFRS 17. The new standard is now effective since 1 January 2023 and changed fundamentally the way insurance companies present their obligations and their financial performance stemming from insurance contracts according to IFRS. \nAs evolving experience shows\, actuaries play a key role in this area. The standard requires many fundamental decisions\, which determines the amount and profile of IFRS results for years to come. Complex measurement models have been developed and the collaboration and communication with accounting functions has become more intense and more complex. Actuaries need to explain the actuarial valuation output as well as the impact of applied accounting decisions and the corresponding consequences for the financial statements to their top-management. \nAccordingly\, a strong focus of this web session lies on the accounting framework in which actuaries operate. It addresses the specifics of all relevant insurance lines of business and highlights key conceptual topics and options the standard offers for implementation. It will also address the impact on transition\, which will often affect the financial statements for years to come. The web session will be useful for both finance and actuarial experts involved in IFRS 17 implementation or simply interested in the practical application of this ground-breaking new standard.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-05-06

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'GenAI Beyond the Basics: Advanced Concepts for Actuaries'
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI (GenAI) tools\, such as ChatGPT\, are rapidly reshaping the way actuaries approach problem-solving\, analysis\, and communication. Beyond their familiar web-based interfaces\, these tools offer powerful functionalities through programmatic integration\, which allows users to directly access and interact with the underlying Large Language Models (LLMs) via APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Unlike standard web-based interactions\, API access enables actuaries to seamlessly integrate GenAI into their existing workflows. Furthermore\, it supports scalable usage\, where multiple requests can be processed simultaneously or sequentially\, allowing for more efficient handling of large volumes. In this two-hour web session\, participants will experience interactive live demonstrations\, where advanced GenAI concepts are presented and applied to real actuarial use cases. \nAfter introducing the basics of applying GenAI through APIs\, we will explore the following advanced GenAI concepts: \nFine-Tuning: Customizing pre-trained LLMs with domain-specific data to improve accuracy and relevance in generating responses.\nRetrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): Combining LLMs with external data sources to produce contextually enriched and up-to-date outputs.\nFunction Calling: Enabling LLMs to execute predefined operations\, such as calculations or database queries\, by invoking specific functions in the underlying programming language.\nStructured Outputs: Generating responses in predefined formats\, such as JSON or tabular data\, to ensure consistency and integration with other systems or processes.\nFor each concept\, the session will present its purpose\, principles\, and functionality\, accompanied by a relevant actuarial use case to illustrate its practical application. The session will conclude with an outlook on future developments\, followed by a space for questions and open discussion.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-05-05
