SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Worldwide Mortality: From Historical Trends to Future Projections'
DESCRIPTION:Life expectancy is a key metric for understanding mortality trends and it varies widely depending on factors such as age\, gender and geography. During this websession\, we will delve into the latest research and data on mortality trends and explore how they have changed over time. \nSince the middle of the 20th century\, world-wide mortality has steadily improved\, but not at the same rate in all regions\, so that clear differences can be recognised between countries. In some OECD – countries\, there has even been a recent decline in mortality improvement\, and the COVID-19 pandemic has at least temporarily reinforced this trend. \nWe analyse different age groups\, their causes of death and how they coincide with mortality developments. In addition to that\, we will discuss the drivers behind changes in mortality\, such as advances in medicine and public health\, changes in lifestyle and socioeconomic factors.\nUnderstanding the various drivers of mortality is essential for predicting future trends and consequently for the assessment of the biometric risk in life- and pension insurance. \nOur online training will also explore the implications of changing life expectancies for our work as actuaries. We will discuss how we can use data and analysis to better understand these changes and make informed decisions about the future. In this context\, we also outline the strengths and limitations of the Lee-Carter model as a widely used model for predicting future mortality rates. \nLast but not least\, we discuss general uncertainties around future mortality\, where we focus especially on the demographic and geographical factors analysed in the first part of the lecture.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2025-01-21

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Stochastic Projection Models in Life Insurance'
DESCRIPTION:This web session provides an overview of three conceptually different approaches for stochastic life insurance projection models currently observable in the market. It compares their key ideas\, explains their strengths & challenges\, and introduces the underlying mathematical / actuarial methodologies. Concerning the application of the comparably little-known Liability-2-Step approach\, the session will present the operational experience of an Austrian insurance company. Although the comparison of the modelling approaches will mainly be conducted from the viewpoint of Solvency II reporting\, the session will also discuss their applicability as basis for the integration of external financial reporting with internal planning and performance management. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-12-11 \nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0448

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session Inflation Risk Management
DESCRIPTION:Over the last five years many countries have seen substantial swings in inflation. This volatility\, following an extended period of relative stability\, has reminded actuaries that unexpected changes in inflation rates can have big implications for organisations that they work for. \nInsurers and pension funds wanting to manage inflation risks will typically find it beneficial to approach this task from a range of perspectives. They will likely want to explore recent as well as more historic inflation experiences and the roles played by different actors as well as by broader social and economic trends. They may also want to draw on stylised descriptions of how inflation might be expected to impact assets and liabilities. They then should bear in mind that actual behaviours of many assets and liabilities in past inflationary and deflationary periods have often only loosely corresponded to such stylised descriptions. \nRisk management is\, of course\, ultimately more about seeking to optimise what happens in the future rather than about explaining what went on in the past. So\, in this web session we will introduce the contexts referred to above and we will also explore approaches that can be used by insurers to model\, manage and hedge risks arising from unexpected changes in inflation rates. In some cases\, the inflationary link may be explicit (e.g. if claims include direct inflation indexation clauses). In other cases\, the link may be less precise or more indirect\, but these risks may still need highlighting and exploring if risk management is to be successful.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-12-08\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0464

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Life Biometric Assumptions: Bringing Together New & Classic Methods'
DESCRIPTION:Advances in data analytics techniques\, along with greater availability of data\, have significantly impacted many industries. However\, in insurance\, these advances merely add to the technical foundations upon which the industry was built. It is only recently that modern data analytics techniques have begun to impact insurance companies\, especially in the work actuaries do. \nThe impact has been even slower to emerge in the life insurance sector where\, due to the nature of the business\, there is significantly less claims and exposure data available compared to non-life insurance. As a result\, classic data analytics techniques and data sources are still key to the work actuaries do\, especially when developing biometric assumptions. However\, given the important role biometric assumptions play in the success of a company\, it is important to understand how and if these new techniques should be applied. \nTo help make sense of the evolving landscape\, this web session looks at the various components of life biometric assumptions (e.g. mortality tables\, adjustment factors\, improvement factors\, etc.). For each component the potential sources of internal and external data will be explored. From there the value of classic data analytics techniques\, particularly credibility theory\, will be discussed\, as well as modern techniques\, such as machine learning. All of this will be brought together to give an understanding of the benefits\, drawbacks\, and pitfalls of the various data sources and analytics techniques\, including considerations for data privacy and discrimination. The participants can then use this knowledge to effectively gain the benefits from each based on the quality and quantity of data available within their company and its market.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-12-03\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0455

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Calculation of Life Insurance Products by Means of Markov Chains'
DESCRIPTION:The calculation of life insurance products is traditionally based on the approach of commutation values\, whose table properties enable extensive actuarial calculations even without large computer capacities. However\, especially for modern and more flexible life insurance tariffs\, the calculation by means of commutation values reaches its limits\, so that the calculation approach based on Markov chains is gaining in importance and has been used for some time in the mathematical cores of new portfolio administration systems. \n  \nThis web session will provide an insight into the calculation of common life insurance products using the Markov approach. For this purpose\, first an overview of the best-selling life insurance products in some European countries and their classic calculation will be given. In the following\, the principle of Markov chains is explained and a model for calculating actuarial values is derived. \n  \nFinally\, the online training also addresses problems that can arise when migrating from classically calculated portfolios to systems with the Markov approach. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-11-25 \nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0447

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Emerging Risks: Statistical Analysis and Scenario Building'
DESCRIPTION:In a context of widespread instability\, the actuarial analysis of emerging risks takes on particular importance to facilitate the adaptation of insurance to these profound changes. Whether it be old risks with poorly anticipated consequences (such as the epidemiological risk\, as demonstrated by the recent Covid-19 crisis\, whose consequences can significantly exceed purely healthcare boundaries)\, risks undergoing strong and worrying evolution (such as climate risk)\, or more recent risks (such as cyber risk)\, the task of actuaries is particularly delicate. The lack of data is notably a hindrance to a rigorous approach to these important questions. This session aims to lay the groundwork for a scientific approach to this problem and to introduce some tools for discussing the insurability of these new risks. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-11-04 \nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0445

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Predictive Modelling in the Insurance Sector'
DESCRIPTION:Predictive modeling is a process used to forecast future outcomes or behaviours based on historical data and patterns. By building mathematical models that analyse past data predictive modelling aims to uncover relationships between different variables in a dataset and use those relationships to make predictions about new observations. \nOverall\, these methods complement the traditional actuarial vision in the insurance sector by providing insurers with advanced analytical tools and techniques to improve risk assessment\, underwriting\, pricing\, and fraud detection processes\, ultimately leading to better decision-making and more profitable business outcomes. \nDuring the session\, we will provide an overview of how predictive modelling works and highlight some of its applications in the insurance sector. This will be followed by a demonstration of a use case where these models were used to assist in pricing a motor book. We will walk through the process from cleaning and processing data\, to analysing and fitting the model\, and finally\, to finding insights and understanding the outputs. Additionally\, we will cover ideas on how to use those outputs to create a pricing guide for policies.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-11-03\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0458

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'System Migrations of Life Insurance Contracts: DON’T JUST MIGRATE'
DESCRIPTION:During the seminar\, the aforementioned will be concretely illustrated based on a migration of a very diverse classic life insurance portfolio (with guaranteed life and/or death performance in various combinations). On the one hand\, we will go over the different steps (actuarial and non-actuarial- in a migration project and on the other hand\, we will demonstrate how this portfolio can a) be migrated to a modern generic cash-flow-driven management platform (universal life + unit linked)\, and b) at the same time the life insurance policies can also be renewed. During the seminar participants will understand that the underlying renewal is fundamental to make the migration a real success: both for the insurer and for the policyholders and beneficiaries.Although the aforementioned will be illustrated from Belgian practice\, we believe that this innovative migration strategy is useful\, relevant and innovative in many other countries. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-11-03

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Assets and Liabilities Management (Part 2: Advanced)'
DESCRIPTION:For an insurance company\, ensuring the proper coordination between assets and liabilities in order to achieve targeted financial objectives is of paramount interest. A strategy used to reach such objectives is „asset and liability management“ (ALM in short). ALM can therefore be viewed as any ongoing process that defines\, implements\, and monitors financial strategies to manage assets and liabilities together. \n  \nIn recent years\, the modelling tools used in ALM strategies have become increasingly sophisticated and the technical aspects of current insurance regulation have increased. As a result\, some ALM aspects have become more and more difficult to understand and master. \nThe second part is more advanced and intended for those wishing to gain more in-depth expertise on the topics. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-10-10 \nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0426

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Strategic Balance Sheet Management (Business Game)'
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the workshop is to teach the participants the impact of the various levers an insurer can pull to manage its capital position and in turn manage its balance sheet towards the requirements of the different viewpoints an insurer has\, i.e. IFRS17\, Solvency II\, Local GAAP and of course an economic asset view.\nWe will start the day by introducing the concept of strategic balance sheet management. Set goals and ambitions to optimize the key performance indicators to which insurance companies manage themselves. We will demonstrate how you can replicate the balance sheet of an insurer in a platform designed to do this. We will then show you tools you can use to alter the capital position of the insurer.\nFrom here we will move onto exercises. We are going to make the game real and create smaller groups. Each group has its own insurer inside its own environment. Each group will be set goals\, to manage towards certain KPI’s. They get their time to confer with their colleagues and present their findings.\nThe ultimate goal is to demonstrate how the activity of one group can differ. We will illuminate how the activity of departments in isolation can influence the balance sheet of the wider insurer and by extension other departments.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-10-08\nLink: https://actuarial-academy.com/seminars/seminar?No=E0463

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Climate Change Scenarios in Context – A Stress Testing Case Study'
DESCRIPTION:Climate Risk scenarios are commonly used in the insurance industry for stress testing\, but interpreting and communicating results is often challenging\, given strong limitations and complex assumptions. Why are physical stresses often so low\, and what can be done about this? What is the impact of the recent surge in fossil fuels on transition risk? What is the role of inflation and interest rates within the scenarios? \nFurthermore\, the scenarios have also substantially evolved over the last years. This has not only substantial implications on results and key messages from stress testing\, but also on how scenarios can be applied for stress testing purposes. \nThis session will have a practical focus around a case study in order to illustrate not only the practical elements of stress testing\, but also discuss challenges and limitations and provide context around the foundations surrounding the scenarios. We will introduce commonly used scenarios\, provide practical guidance on implementation of stress tests\, and discuss key evolutions\, challenges\, and limitations in the interpretation of stress test results. We will conclude with an outlook on how key challenges are expected to be addressed going forward.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-10-07

SUMMARY:EAA Seminar 'Open Source Tools R and Python: Extending the Tool of the Actuary'
DESCRIPTION:Over the last years\, typical data science tasks like data manipulation and modelling have gained a stronger foothold in the day-to-day professional life of the actuary. Open source languages are renowned to be especially equipped to deal with these kind of tasks\, but can also be tricky to get started with\, especially when one has not been properly introduced to them. This workshop offers the opportunity to become more familiar with the open source environment and their applications\, illustrated in detail by means of a number of hands-on modules\, hereby enabling the actuary to tackle the data science tasks in an elegant manner. \nOpen source tools like R\, Python and more recently Julia have gained a lot of momentum in recent years\, not just in popularity but also in number of contributed code. Their respective communities are nowadays no longer exclusively composed of academic researchers and scientists\, but also of professionals of all sorts of backgrounds\, especially since the industry and corporate world have understood the added value of ‘community driven software’ and started to plug open source tools into their processes and corporate tissue. \nOn top of this\, actuaries are confronted with the same issues as academic researchers and scientists: the production of readable\, shareable and reproducible code and results. In the actuarial community\, R already is a fairly known and used open source language\, Python however a little bit less\, even if it’s also packed with potential and even if it disposes of a vast biosphere of its own. This workshop will also focus on the ’scientific stack‘ of both R and Python and draw some comparisons between both worlds where we will try to show that it’s not a matter of choosing between both ecosystems but of choosing the best of both (continuously evolving) worlds. \nThe goal of this two-day training is to introduce the participants to both open source ecosystems and to get a good understanding of both languages. However\, since both ecosystems are way too vast to be covered in merely two days\, the participants will be asked to go through the basics of both languages themselves\, prior to the seminar. During the first three hours of the seminar\, these basics which will be shortly revised\, but at a higher pace. In this way\, the presenters can focus more on examples and on providing more hands-on experience to the participants. The course material\, containing the basics of both languages\, will be provided by the organizers several weeks before the beginning of the seminar\, such that the participants will have plenty of time to go through the material at her/his ease.\nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-09-24
