SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Climate Day 5.0'
DESCRIPTION:The debate on climate change has rapidly evolved in recent years. It is no longer on whether the evidence of human impact on climate change is real\, but on whether key mitigating strategies being adopted are sufficient. \n  \nFor insurance industry\, climate change manifests itself through a variety of risks on the asset and liability sides of the balance sheet. In our Climate Day 5.0\, we are going to zoom into the following topics: \n  \nHow can we capture the tail dependency between heat and mortality? \nHow climate change impact upon an asset portfolio can be captured in one KPI? \nHow can ESG risks be reflected in the strategy of an insurance company? \nWhat is the impact of climate change on low-income people and what insurers should be doing? \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-06-13

SUMMARY:: EAA Web Session 'How to Read the New IFRS Balance Sheet for Insurers'
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this three-hour web session is to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction on the new IFRS reporting requirements for insurance contracts after go-live of IFRS 17. Focus will be the illustration of the new reporting requirements of IFRS 17 to “demystify” the new presentation requirements on the IFRS balance sheet and the statement(s) of financial performance (Profit and Loss as well as Other Comprehensive Income). The web session will also briefly compare key aspects of the new reporting requirements to former IFRS 4-reporting practice\, contain a brief summary of the main information which can be found within the new IFRS 17 reporting and cover the different aspects for primary and reinsurance related business. \n  \nOverall\, the goal is to enable participants to understand the IFRS 17 reporting and help transferring the reporting requirements into the specific situation of the participant. It is thus intended to prepare participants for analysing\, testing\, reviewing\, and consulting with management\, accounting\, and auditors. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-06-13

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Non-Life Reserving'
DESCRIPTION:As Insurance is being impacted by new and disruptive technology\, how will actuarial reserving techniques be impacted? Whilst triangle methods have traditionally been seen as the key methods in the reserving area\, this may be challenged in the future by more complex expectations\, improving technology\, modelling capabilities\, etc. \n  \nReserving practices are expected to keep changing\, as the influences of big data and regulatory requirements continue to evolve. \n  \nThe aim of this workshop is to \n  \nRefresh classical actuarial/statistical techniques used in non-life reserving (Gaap and Solvency 2). \nFocus on some practical problems faced by reserving actuaries\, by presenting practical examples. \nIntroduce more advanced techniques used in non-life reserving in order to open new perspectives on more granular reserving calculation\, case estimates\, etc. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-06-06

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Comparing IFRS17 and Solvency II'
DESCRIPTION:This session aims at analysing the impact of IFRS17 versus Solvency II. After a general description of both frameworks\, we highlight the most recent expected changes following the Solvency II review with a focus on discount rates and risk margin. We will then explain IFRS17 accounting choices versus Solvency II and benchmark those. Finally\, we will show the impact of IFRS17 on the management of the contracts when issued and during their lifetime (profit testing and key indicators). \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-05-27

SUMMARY:EAA Seminar 'Actuarial Methods for Cyber Insurance' in Lisbon
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this seminar is to provide an overview on cyber risk and on the ability of cyber insurance to cover it. After an introduction describing the specificities (technological\, technical\, actuarial) of cyber risk\, we discuss the actuarial models that can be adapted to pricing and reserving in the context of cyber insurance and reinsurance. We also discuss the question of «insurability» of cyber\, and of quantification and prevention of accumulation scenarios. \n  \nAfter completing this course\, you will be able to \n  \n– Identify the specificities of cyber risk \n– Know the contents of typical insurance and reinsurance policies on cyber \n– Understand the impact of legislation on cyber insurance \n– Understand the practical constraints of cyber underwriting and how an efficient underwriting policy can help to reducing the risk \n– Identify the factors that may jeopardize the mutualisation of cyber risk Identify extreme events and convey a risk segmentation \n– Construct accumulation scenarios on a cyber portfolio \n– Quantify the impact of protection measures on the risk of saturation in the insurer response capacity \n– Handle numerical tools and practical applications \n– Identify the key aspects of cyber claim management \n– Anticipate major trends in the evolution of the risk \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-05-12

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Commission’s Request to an Adapted Framework'
DESCRIPTION:Solvency II-Review was initiated in February 2019 with Commission’s request for technical advice to EIOPA. This advice constituted the basis for Commission’s proposal for an amendment of the SII-framework and the proposal to deal with recovery and resolution in a separate Directive. Council and later Parliament proposed numerous amendments to these proposals. These have been discussed by the trialogue parties since September 2023. The agreement achieved in December 2023 on the reform of the framework was an important milestone. \n  \nThis agreement paves the way for the adaptation of the Solvency II-framework and for the introduction of the new Insurance Recovery and Resolution Directive (IRRD). \n  \nSome relevant details of previously discussed issues are shifted to Delegated Regulation or Technical Standards and are not finalised. The Commission’s empowerments together with EIOPA’s previous technical advice allow already by now a first assessment of the outcome. \n  \nThis web session will deal with the following topics: \n  \n\na) Proposed amendments of the SII-Directive\nb) Expected amendments of Delegated Regulation and Technical Standards\nc) Fundamental components of the IRRD\n\n  \nThe goal of this web session is to provide an overview of the status of the SII-review and to assess the possible implications for actuaries and undertakings. Aspects of the IRRD and the interrelation between IRRD and Solvency II will be discussed. Commission is empowered to lay down technical details in Delegated Regulation or Technical Standards to complete the prudential framework. Actuarial topics which might be tackled in this process will be discussed as well. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-03-19

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Credit Risk'
DESCRIPTION:Credit risk arises from the potential that a borrower or counterparty fails to meet its financial obligations. This can be related to a deterioration of the financial or liquidity position of the counterparty ultimately leading to default. The sources and propagation of credit risk can be both specific and systemic. Insurers and banks are significantly exposed to this risk via their fixed income investments\, loans and other recoverables requiring a proper understanding of the drivers and a tailored risk management. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-03-08

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Cash Balance Pension Schemes
DESCRIPTION:The objective of this web session is to give an overview of these Cash Balance mechanisms and illustrate some interesting actuarial problems of the topic. In a first part\, we will define the concept of CB and compare it with other pension schemes. We will present advantages and disadvantages for all the parties. We will look at the effect of introducing a legal minimum return in the system. The second part is devoted to more quantitative studies. First\, we will develop some financial valuation issues induced by the technique. We will look also at preferences between CB and DC in terms of utility function as well for the sponsor as for the affiliates; we will show in particular that we can express the problem as the Nash equilibrium of a game between the sponsor and the affiliates. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2023-10-09 \n

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'IFRS 17: The Premium Allocation Approach'
DESCRIPTION:To enhance the applicability of the PAA\, judgment of the details of the eligibility criteria is needed. We will discuss those details and the hurdles included. Further\, we will discuss the details of the PAA measurement particularly in comparison with traditional methods which might be applied as approximation. The combination of the simplified approach together with the general model to be applied to the claims liability is a further topic. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-02-27

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'IFRS 17: Guidance for Risk Adjustments'
DESCRIPTION:IFRS 17 requires that risks inherent in the cash flows of the insurance contracts are considered in measurement\, differentiating between financial risks and non-financial risks. While the financial risks are measured at their current (estimated) market value\, non-financial risks are measured at “the compensation that the entity requires for bearing the uncertainty about the amount and timing of the cash flows that arises from non-financial risk”. \n  \nIdentifying the uncertainties\, for both amount and timing\, factors influencing the uncertainties like random deviations or changes of risk over time and differentiating between financial and non-financial risk for quantifying the risk and identifying the entity-specific risk aversion for associating a value to the estimated quantity of risk demands a deep understanding of the concepts of IFRS 17. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-02-19

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session CERA\, Module A: Quantitative Methods of ERM
DESCRIPTION:The 4-day web session assists actuaries in broadening their knowledge about modern quantitative financial and actuarial modelling; these topics form an essential part of the CERA syllabus. At the beginning of the online training we give a brief overview of the EAA-route to the CERA designation. The core part of the web session begins with an introduction to the modern theory of risk measures. Next\, a number of statistical techniques are discussed\, that are highly relevant for the analysis of actuarial and financial data and for the model-building process in risk management. Among others\, we will consider extreme value theory\, dependence modelling\, copulas\, and various aspects of integrated risk management. The training continues with an introduction to the modelling and the management of interest rate and credit risk. In particular\, participants will learn how to price simple interest options or Credit Default Swaps\,  how to account for counterparty risk and how to deal with credit portfolio risk. \n  \nThe web session consists of lectures and exercise sessions. In fact\, exercise sessions\, where various exercises and supplementary examples are discussed\, form an integral part of the seminar: they help the participants to understand the qualitative and quantitative techniques introduced in the lectures\, and they are a key element in the preparation for the CERA exam. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-02-09

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Socio-Economic Mortality Curves
DESCRIPTION:Mortality curves are a critical ingredient for the valuation of any longevity-related product (for example\, pensions\, life insurance\, reverse mortgages). Typically\, several statistical agencies provide mortality curves differentiated on gender per country. However\, it has been documented that people’s mortality prospects differ beyond their differences in gender. Income\, education\, job type\, etc might all have an impact on mortality. In this online training\, we present 1) how such distinctive characteristics can be considered in a mortality model\, 2) empirical results (based on Belgian data) and 3) the implications for retirement products valuations. Though the empirical results are based on Belgian data\, many results are qualitatively in line with other European countries. \nThe goal of the session is to clarify the impact of various socio-economic factors on mortality and its impact on the valuation and risk-management of retirement products. At the end of the session\, people will have a good understanding of \n1) Impact of socio-economic status on mortality rates \n2) Impact of differences in mortality curves on product valuations \n3) Adjusting mortality models to take socio-economic factors into account. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-01-30

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session 'Calculation of Life Insurance Products by Means of Markov Chains'
DESCRIPTION:The calculation of life insurance products is traditionally based on the approach of commutation values\, whose table properties enable extensive actuarial calculations even without large computer capacities. However\, especially for modern and more flexible life insurance tariffs\, the calculation by means of commutation values reaches its limits\, so that the calculation approach based on Markov chains is gaining in importance and has been used for some time in the mathematical cores of new portfolio administration systems. \n  \nThis web session will provide an insight into the calculation of common life insurance products using the Markov approach. For this purpose\, first an overview of the best-selling life insurance products in some European countries and their classic calculation will be given. In the following\, the principle of Markov chains is explained and a model for calculating actuarial values is derived. \n  \nFinally\, the seminar also addresses problems that can arise when migrating from classically calculated portfolios to systems with the Markov approach. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2024-01-22

SUMMARY:EAA Web Session: Cross-Border: One Tariff for 27 EU countries?
DESCRIPTION:Cross-Border business plays an important role in Europe´s insurance industry. For anyone running this business some topics are obvious. These are especially legal issues. Insurance supervision laws have been harmonised by Solvency\, but not (yet) insurance contract laws or tax legislation. \n  \nEven if these laws have substantial influence on the calculation of tariffs\, the online training wants to give insights on how to keep the influence low and puts focus on actuarial issues. \n  \nDo we need 27 different mortality tables for 27 EU- countries? \nWhat about differences in underwriting? \nQuestions like this will be discussed in the web session. \n  \nWithout claiming to have experience from 27 EU countries\, the referent will share his knowledge and experience about calculating same tariffs for more than 10 countries. \nAnmeldeschluss: 2023-11-28
